Thursday Night Thunder

Mike White
USA National Team

Cheri Kempf

National Fast-Pitch League

There is no better way to get the annual “Be the Best You Are’’ clinic going than this amazing night of softball talk. For 10 years now the clinic has begun with these informative sessions that include eight discussions over a two-hour period with eight different speakers, each talking on a specific subject.
The 50-minute sessions on Thursday night serve as a great preamble to what lies ahead at the “Be the Best You Are’’ softball clinic. We’ve never had a better reason for coaches to come early to the clinic than we have this year at Thursday Night Thunder. Pitching gurus Michael White of the USA National team and Cheri Kempf, the ESPN commentator and international pitching star, go about the business of teaching young pitchers the art of the trade with a look at fundamentals and drills to increase speed. Karen Weekly, who quickly moved Tennessee up the charts as a softball power, explains how to develop your speed game, and Kate Drohan, who teams with twin sister Caryl at Northwestern, tells how to build a perennial championship contender. Her sister explains some of the fundamentals they teach to keep the titles coming.
Eugene Lenti of DePaul talks about developing footwork for your infielders , Ken Ericksen of South Florida, shows you how to train your catcher and Mark Lumley, the hitting coach for Baylor, gives you the ins and outs of building a conditioning and weight lifting program. In the end, it is a great beginning to building any program.

Mark Lumley

“How To’’ books are everywhere. How to lose weight, how to build a deck, how to afford retirement - the list goes on and they are all on the bookshelves. But sometimes reading “How To’’ isn’t anything like hearing the advice and seeing it in action so you can teach it.
That is one of the ideas that led to the development of the Ultimate Rap sessions. Trying to deal with problem players or their parents? Want to teach hitting to the opposite field? Need help in developing strategies to break up those extra inning games? The information is yours for the asking at this year’s Ultimate Rap.
There is plenty more. Kate Drohan of Northwestern will show you what to feed your players for pre game meals and her twin sister, Caryl, tells you how to set up the cutoff play or the footwork drills needed to improve your chances at turning the double play. Scott Whitlock, the coach who has won more college games than anyone else, explains how to keep your practices fun and to keep them within two-hour limits. Ken Eriksen shows how to defend the speed game.
How to pitch? Who better to show you how to throw everything from the change up to the drop than Cheri Kempf and Michael White, two pitchers who have excelled on the national and international stage. Mark Lumley has been teaching Baylor batters the art of hitting for the last five years and they have become better at it than just about anyone in college softball. He’ll show you how to teach the skill of going the opposite way or hitting the inside pitch.
How to? If you’re at the Ultimate Rap, you’ll find out. Perhaps the signature session of the “Be the Best You Are” clinics are our Friday Ultimate Rap sessions. Coaches continually rank them as the most significant aspect of their three days at the clinic. They tell us that this is where the real grass roots of the game are examined, improved, and taught. The 25-minute, no-bull sessions take interesting topics, top speakers and interested coaches and combine them into a celebration of the game. The speakers’ list includes Karen Weekly of Tennessee, who shows how to build your team speed and take advantage of that asset and of course Eugene Lenti of DePaul will show you how to teach players to give that extra effort and dive for those line drives. Patty Gasso of Oklahoma shows how to build team confidence they way she has at Oklahoma where the Sooners have been a dominant power since her arrival.
They will talk on 30 different topics that are essential to making your program into the best it can be. When it is all said and done you’ll know more about “How to’’ than you ever got from a book, that’s for sure.

A Note from the Hawk's Nest

Ralph Weekly
University of Tennessee

You might not notice right away, but there is a different look to this year’s brochure cover and I thought I’d take a moment to reflect on Bill King, the artist who has done the drawings for the last 30 years. Bill, a legendary sports artist in Central Jersey, passed away last winter. He was a marvelous man who had a great love and understanding of sports. I always enjoyed my meetings with him, where we would discuss the topics for the clinics and he would come up with innovative ideas on how to present the subject manner in a way to catch the eye of coaches. I’m sure he is part of the reason we have had so much success in drawing coaches to Cherry Hill. We’ll miss him.
Another reason for the success has been Ralph Weekly who has continued to line up top speakers for the clinic. He has brought us another collection of world-class college and amateur softball performers to explain the inner workings of the game.
Weekly never fails to come up with something different for our coaches. This year I’m looking forward to the pitching sessions with Cheri Kempf and Mike White. They are two of the best pitchers in the world. But each goes about the business in a different way. Hearing them exchange ideas on how to teach pitches, and how to prepare pitchers mentally and physically should make for interesting discussion.
I know I am looking forward to this clinic, to be held at the Crowne Plaza, because I am always amazed at the dedication of so many coaches who want to make their programs better places for young players to learn the game.
As long as you want us to bring out the best, we will. That’s a promise.
