Thursday Night Thunder

JENNIFER BRUNDAGE
University of Michigan

BILL EDWARDS
Hofstra

There is no better way to get the annual “Be the Best You Are’’ clinic going than this amazing night of softball. For more than 10 years now the clinic has begun with these informative sessions that include eight discussions over a two-hour period with eight different speakers, each talking on a specific subject.
The 50-minute sessions on Thursday night serve as a great preamble to what lies ahead at the “Be the Best You Are” Softball Clinic.
This year’s Thunder sessions have a wide audience in mind – hitting, pitching, fielding and mental toughness.
Jen Croneberger of Ursinus College is a sports psychologist who tells you how to build mental toughness. Scott Whitlock of Kennesaw State explains how to start over in midseason while Karen Weekly, who shares the head coaching duties at Tennessee with her husband Ralph, offers hitting mechanics and drills, essentials of the game.
The coach of the U.S. National Junior team, Tony Rico, offers tips on teaching the slap, Bill Edwards of Hofstra takes the game back to the playground to keep things simple and fun for your players. Beverly Smith of South Carolina helps you explain to pitchers how to recognize weaknesses of batters and Rachel Lawson of Kentucky has game management skills from pre game to post game situations. Jennifer Brundage of Michigan gives her favorite pitching drills and skills for conditioning.
The Thunder sessions have become a must to attend. Thoughtful discussion, followed by drills and skills that can be taught adds up to a successful program. That’s why Thunder has been making noise for all these years.

The Ultimate Rap

Ken Erickson
University Of
South Florida

TONY RICO
Firecracker Softball

The basics are a basic part of the Ultimate Rap sessions, a fixture at the annual “Be the Best You Are’’ clinic. So is the unusual which is why clinicians annually leave no stone unturned at the sessions.
This year is no different. There are eight speakers touching on 24 topics in the dozen 25-minute sessions that carry into the night on Friday.
The list of speakers are down-in-the-dirt type coaches who understand what it takes to win softball games, prepare players mentally and physically, and give them a list of fundamental drills that will stay with them from Little League through college.
Ken Eriksen of South Florida, explains how to catch and set pick-off plays. He’ll also explain how he motivates teams that he coaches and offers some fun and game contests for practice sessions.
Rachel Lawson of Kentucky offers middle infield techniques and drills as well as ways to create and develop leaders.
Troy Acheson of Tennessee Tech is known as a builder of offense. He explains how to increase power hitters’ success and offers circuit drills for small indoor areas. Bill Edwards of Hofstra has spent a lifetime winning softball games. He’ll show how to start, and complete, run-down plays and offers a defensive sequential practice.
Jen Croneberger brings a completely different look at her sessions. A sports psychologist, she tells how to prepare for Big Games and offers pre at-bat routines that help avoid slumps.
Then there is Tony Rico, the coach of the USA Junior World National Team who offers the perspective of coaching travel teams and AAU squads. While he explains how to defend the speed game, his session on balancing high school and travel ball conflicts could be important as AAU continues to grow.
Jennifer Brundage of Michigan explains how to scout an opponent, as well as how to make mental and physical in-game pitching adjustments. Beverly Smith of South Carolina has a long history of success as a pitching guru. She’ll provide a 30-minute pitching workout and how to keep your pitchers legal on their delivery.
If you’re at the Ultimate Rap, you’ll find answers on any subject. Perhaps the signature session of the “Be the Best You Are” clinics are our Friday Ultimate Rap sessions. Coaches continually rank them as the most significant aspect of their three days at the clinic. They tell us that this is where the real grass roots of the game are examined, improved, and taught. The 25-minute, no-bull sessions take interesting topics, top speakers, and interested coaches, and combine them into a celebration of the game.

A Note from the Hawk's Nest

RALPH and KAREN WEEKLY
Tennessee

I’m not sure what I like most about this year’s “Be the Best You Are’’ Softball Clinic. Once again Ralph Weekly, who lines up our speakers, brings former Olympians to the forefront where they will offer pitching tips and theories that will change the way you go about preparing your own staffs during the season.
Both Monica Abbott and Michele Smith can have that type of impact. So can someone like Jen Croneberger. Sure, she is a successful coach now at Ursinus. But her background in sports psychology is what intrigues me. She is one of the eight speakers at our annual Ultimate Rap Sessions on Friday. Professional teams have been using her to help prepare for big games for a decade.
Weekly has put together an interesting mixture of talent for Thursday Thunder and the Rap Sessions. Tony Rico, a coach for the USA Junior World National Team offers a captivating session on balancing high school and travel team conflicts, and Scott Whitlock of Kennesaw State, explains how to start over when the first half of the season has been a disaster. Who hasn’t faced that dilemma? Whitlock also has a main session where he will discuss “What is on My Mind?” which surprises those who know him and are surprised that he has a mind at all (just kidding).
Ken Eriksen talks catching with drills to improve fundamentals. And Ralph and his wife Karen team up to give offensive drills in another main session. But I think I really want to see how our Player’s Clinic works. This is the first time we’ve offered hands-on training for players.
There are a limited number of spots available for this five-hour session with top college coaches.
I know I am looking forward to this clinic, to be held at the Crowne Plaza, because I am always in awe of the dedication of so many coaches who want to make their programs better places for young players to learn the game.
As long as you want us to bring out the best, we will. That’s a promise.
